Velcade and Fizzy Water Don't Mix!

Written by Andrew_Morton, published about 1 year ago.

I had a painful reaction after my first dose of Velcade, due to drinking sparkling mineral water. Since switching to still water, there has been no pain at all.

Hi there, I just wanted to share my experience of my very first dose of Velcade + dexamethasone a few weeks ago. I was advised to drink plenty of water, 2 or 3 litres per day on the day of the injection and the day after at least. So I bought a couple of litre bottles of sparkling mineral water (San Pellegrino, which I happen to like) and drank them as the day went on. About 3 hours after the chemo, about 6pm, when I was back home, I began to get cramps in my forearms and the calves of my legs. These intensified and spread over the next hour to the point where I couldn't walk, so I had to lie down. It felt like people were beating my arms and legs with beams of wood, I really felt as if I was being beaten up! The pain was concentrated where the muscles were thickest, and eventually spread into all parts of my arms and legs, and into my back. I took paracetamol a couple of times. It went on for 9 hours, eventually subsiding at around 3am. When I turned up for my second dose and told the doctor what had happened to me the first time, he said it was highly unusual and was probably down to my drinking fizzy water. Since then I've stuck to tap water and had no pain at all. I thought others might like to know about this because I wasn't given any warning this might happen. By the way, this is NOT a complaint, just a (hopefully) helpful tip.
